General Education Program

Act 98 of 1989 provides for the establishment of a minimum core of courses which will apply toward the general education core curriculum requirements for baccalaureate degrees at statesupported institutions of higher education and which will be fully transferable between state institutions. Students should review the Associate of Arts degree or Associate of Science degree for general education requirements.

Mission: It is the goal of the general education program at the University of Arkansas - Pulaski Tech to develop a foundation for the lifelong pursuit of learning in all students and prepare them for university transfer. Core classes are designed to enable students to develop to their fullest potential by communicating effectively and developing knowledge and skills necessary for critical inquiry in an ever changing world.

Once a student has completed the general education as part of a transferrable Associate degree, the student will be able to do the following:

Communicate Effectively:


Create an oral presentation or written work that is informative, well-reasoned, organized, researched, and demonstrates knowledge of convention.

Reason Quantitatively:


Apply mathematical methods using symbolic, graphical, numerical, and written representations to solve problems using modeling and/or general problem solving processes, and use appropriate technology to construct or analyze quantitative data to draw conclusions about the reasonableness of the results.

Analyze Critically:


Critically analyze major works of fine arts or literature and articulate the analysis using terminology, methodologies, or research appropriate in the field.

Synthesis Concepts:


Synthesize information through a historical, social, cultural, or psychological lens that demonstrates proficiency in the usage of terms and concepts relevant to the social sciences.

Make Scientific Inquiries:


Apply the scientific method, understand the criteria for scientific evidence and use that evidence to draw conclusions and make informed decisions.

General Education Requirements for Technical Certificates


Students in technical certificate programs are required to complete a three-credit-hour course in mathematics and a three-credit-hour course in communication or English*. Students may choose, upon approval of advisor, to substitute higher level general education courses for the required courses. Refer to each individual program curriculum for specific general education course requirements.

*These requirements may be embedded throughout the program’s curriculum.

General Education Requirements for Associate of Applied Science Degrees


General education requirements for the A.A.S. degree programs vary, depending on the particular technical program requirements. All AAS programs require at least 15 credit hours of English/communication, mathematics, social science, and computer skills. Refer to each individual program curriculum for specific general education course requirements.

Note: Some courses have prerequisites that must be met before the courses can be taken. Please refer to the course descriptions  in this catalog to determine prerequisites
